Merkel Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report

DOI : 10.5146/jcpath.2019.53 Aim: Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare neuroendocrine skin tumor with poor prognosis. Here we present a case of Merkel cell carcinoma on the upper lip and the characteristic features and differential diagnosis were discussed in the light of the literature.

Case: A 69-year-old male patient was admitted to dermatology department with a rapidly growing skin lesion on the upper lip. The patient diagnosed as Merkel cell carcinoma with punch biopsy followed by the total excision of the lesion with clear surgical margins.

Conclusion: Merkel cell carcinoma is an uncommon lesion that needs to be distinguished from other cutaneous malignancies. It should be kept in mind that the clinical course of this tumor is often aggressive. Anahtar Kelimeler : Merkel cell carcinoma, Skin, Neuroendocrine tumor
